WHAT IS LES MILLS?
Les Mills is the premier group fitness programming company, known internationally for their choreographed exercise-to-music classes. Each class mixes great music with solid science to help people fall in love with fitness and reach their exercise goals.
Les Mills began in 1968 in Auckland, New Zealand when four-time Olympian Leslie Roy “Les” Mills opened his first gym: Les Mills World of Fitness. Les Mills quickly grew to a popular chain of gyms, which inspired Leslie’s son Philip Mills and daughter-in-law Jackie to begin developing high-energy aerobics and strengths classes.
The Mills’ workouts were the first of their kind – group workouts driven by the beat of modern music. Once launched in the Les Mills World of Fitness gyms, lines of people would fill the streets to attend these classes and the Mills knew that there was real power in group fitness.
Les Mills is now an International company, still run by Philip Mills, that offers over a dozen fitness programs including popular group fitness classes BODYPUMP and BODYFLOW. Their workouts are licensed by 17,500 gyms in 100 countries around the world – now including Miramont Lifestyle Fitness.
WHY IS MIRAMONT SWITCHING TO LES MILLS?
Previously, Miramont’s core group exercise programming came from MOSSA, the developer of classes such as Group Power and Group Fight. While these classes are enjoyable and popular among our members, we decided to make the switch to Les Mills for these five reasons:
- Les Mills is more engaging, energizing, and inspiring for both our members and Team. Who isn’t excited about something NEW?
- Les Mills provides an outstanding amount of support for the Group Exercise Team as well as our members.
- Les Mills is a better value pure and simple – in the same amount of time, you’re going to burn more calories and see better strength and muscle-building results!
- Les Mills has more facilities and recognition than MOSSA, providing more opportunities for instructors’ professional development and for members to get familiar workouts at other facilities. (MOSSA is only in two other clubs in Colorado while Les Mills is in over a 100… So if you move or travel, and you happen to be change averse like the rest of us, it shouldn’t be too hard for you to find the same great workouts you already know and love.)
- Les Mills offers youth programming, Small Group Training, and new member onboarding programs which will support a more inclusive, consistent, and community focused experience.
If you liked MOSSA classes, we’re confident that you’ll LOVE the Les Mills equivalent. Each class ranges from 30 minutes to 55 minutes long so you can fit it in on even the busiest of days (that’s the same length of time as an episode on Netflix, so yeah you can do it!). Les Mills classes are great for exercisers who prefer a group setting and the social support that comes from a bit of internalized, healthy competition. Les Mills will give you the extra motivation to put down the Cheetos, get off the couch, and get strong!
WHAT LES MILLS CLASSES Does MIRAMONT OFFER?
Currently, Miramont Lifestyle Fitness offers 7 classes from the Les Mills repertoire including BODYPUMP, CXWORX, BODYCOMBAT, BODYSTEP, BODYVIVE, BODYFLOW, and RPM. Keep reading to learn more about each class including how many calories you can expect to burn (i.e. how many glasses of wine you’ve earned for this weekend), and how often you need to attend the Les Mills class to see results.
BODYPUMP is the original barbell class and the first class launched by Les Mills International for other gyms to teach. One of the most popular Les Mills classes, BODYPUMP works all major muscle groups in just 55 minutes. Instead of designated upper or lower body strength training days, BODYPUMP will give you a total body workout every time. Each workout is designed around a 10-song playlist, with each track focusing on a different muscle group (e.g. squats, triceps, core, etc.).
BODYPUMP is scientifically proven to tone and shape your entire body using its signature Rep Effect formula. The Rep Effect is a low-weight, high-reputation strategy that aims to improve aerobic fitness, muscular strength, and muscular endurance. Instead of traditional heavy lifting designed to build muscle, BODYPUMP fatigues the muscles with low weights to develop leaner muscles. In a single BODYPUMP class you can expect to perform 800 to 1,000 reps!
While people can burn up to 560 calories during a BODYPUMP workout, the building of lean muscle mass is the real benefit. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you’ll burn throughout the day – even at rest!
Since BODYPUMP challenges all your major muscle groups, it’s recommended to take the class no more than two to three times per week (with at least one day in-between classes for muscle repair). At three times a week, that’s a solid 3 glass-o-wine weekend + 1,220 calories gone! Complement this class with two or three cardio classes a week to see the best results!
In BODYFLOW, you’ll work your mind and body! The class offers an energizing blend of yoga with Tai Chi and Pilates to improve joint flexibility, increase core strength, and lower stress. Ideal for anyone and everyone. BODYFLOW is great for beginners and yogis alike. Even if you’ve never done yoga before, the instructor will show you all appropriate options to make the workout work for you.
Why is BODYFLOW effective? Controlled breathing and concentration coupled with a structured series of moves and poses to music creates a holistic workout that will bring your body into a state of harmony. Each class features 10 songs that will carry you through combinations and stretches.
BODYFLOW is a great complementary class to other more intense, high-impact workouts and you’ll see results going as little as one time a week! You’ll burn up to 340 calories in this hour workout.
So shed your shoes, grab a yoga mat, and embrace the journey to a healthier, happier mind and body!
Get yourself into shape one step at a time. BODYSTEP is a full-body cardio workout that is structured around the basic move of walking up and down stairs. The step will become your best friend as you blast through cardio sets – conditioning your lungs and heart and improving your coordination and agility.
BODYSTEP is a higher-impact workout, but the tougher workout will help you improve bone healthy and density. The stepping motion will also target your glutes and legs, shaping your rear end. This workout is a calorie torcher, and students can expect to burn up to 620 per hour.
Worried about not being coordinated enough for this workout? Your not alone! It can take up to five classes to get comfortable with the moves. Start with a lower step and focus on your feet before you add in arm movements. Let the instructor know before class that you’re new for extra tips.
Energize your workout routine by adding BODYCOMBAT, a dynamic martial-arts inspired workout, to the mix. BODYCOMBAT is 100% non-contact and only uses your body weight to get you fit, fast, and strong. Basic moves from disciplines like Karate, Taekwondo, Boxing, Muay Thai, Capoeira, and Kung Fu will keep you on your toes and the workout fresh. No martial arts experience necessary!
BODYCOMBAT is a full-body cardio workout that will target every muscle group. This class is great for getting a workout and releasing a great amount of stress at the same time. It also supports coordination, agility and speed unlike many stationary or non-functional workouts.
You’ll burn up to 740 calories in a single, 55-minute workout. With that high of a calorie burn, you won’t have to feel guilty about noshing on those office treats after a stressful meeting.
Bring your warrior attitude as you punch and kick your way to your fittest self. For best results with the BODYCOMBAT program, attend class two to three times a week.
CXWORX is an essential class for everyone’s wellbeing and fitness goals. This unique, 30-minute class focuses entirely on the core, helping students learn how to activate muscles responsible for optimal core control. The focus of this class is great technique and awareness so you can make your body stronger.
The CXWORX program is rooted in science, bringing attention to the torso and sling muscles that connect your upper body to your lower body. You’ll get the external benefits of a tighter tummy and butt plus internal benefits like functional strength and injury prevention assistance.
With its low impact nature and simple moves, CXWORX is for all ages, abilities, and fitness levels. You can expect some work with resistance tubes and weight plates as well as bodyweight exercises like crunches and hovers.
CXWORX can burn up to 200 calories per class. For best results, attend this class two to three times a week in combination with other Les Mills classes.
Strength, cardio, and core all in one energizing workout: BODYVIVE 3.1! A safe and effective workout, BODYVIVE 3.1 is a lower intensity class that will keep you working hard in the fat-burning zone (great for weight loss!). This challenging hour will mix lunges, squats, running, and tubing exercises to help you get lean and toned.
BODYVIVE 3.1 will train you to execute common exercise moves correctly and with proper form. This class isn’t just for beginner exercisers, though! The instructor will give you a range of options so you can work up a sweat no matter your fitness level.
BODYVIVE 3.1 can burn up to 490 calories each class, and will leave you buzzing with energy afterwards!
Try high intensity interval training with RPM, Les Mills’ indoor cycling class. This low impact class will get your blood pumping with fun music set to a series of hill climbs, sprints, and flat riding. You’ll improve aerobic fitness and build leg strength and muscular endurance (without the bulk).
RPM is super easy to customize to your fitness level as you control your own resistance levels and speed. As your fitness improves, you can adjust the workout to meet your increasing strength.
RPM and similar cycling classes will reap the most benefits if you go two to three times a week. This class burns loads of calories – up to 620 calories an hour. Work off your Starbucks and get ready for the Tour de France simultaneously.

Each class strives to be inclusive and intentional, getting you the fitness and health results you’re looking for in a compassionate (and fun!) environment. Running late to class?
